I’m sure I’m not the only one who is excited that Spring is in full effect. The sun is out and the weather is warm. Granted, where I live that is the norm for most of the year, but there is just something different about Spring and Summer months. People are happier, vacations are made, food is fresher, and the cocktails are sweeter! With the dog days of summer approaching, I wanted to find must-haves for those fun filled sunny days at the beach or pool.
With this being my first summer as a mom, I had to think differently about what to pack in my beach bag, what sunscreen to use, and for the first time, how to dress my child appropriately for a day in the sun.
I knew I needed to:
1) Find an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) bathing suit that covered a good amount of the torso, arms, and legs.
2) Find a wide-brimmed hat that protects the face, neck, and ears.
3) Look for swim shoes that would protect my child from the ocean floor, harsh sand and keep his feet from burning.
4) Find good 30-50 SPF+ all natural sunscreen options (which I have, and those tips can be found on my sunscreen blog post).
5) Make sure my beach bag was stocked with large, well-absorbing towels, extra change of clothes, wipes, snacks, and other daily baby essentials.
6) Make sure my child still looked stylish and didn’t resemble a bizarre looking extinct swim creature J
If I was planning on spending the majority of the day at the beach or pool, I also needed to make sure to have my child protected, hydrated and shaded during peak sun hours of 10am-2pm. This led me on a search for a UV protected play/beach shade. I am still on the hunt for float devices that can handle the ocean and pool.
Below are my top favorite finds!
Bathing Suits/Swim Diapers
i play. Unisex-baby Infant Short Sleeve Rashguard Shirt: These shirts are great. They cover my child to the elbow, have a UPF of 50+ and come in multiple colors. You can mix and match with swim bottoms.
i play Baby Boys' Ultimate Pocket Trunks: I love the bright design of these trunks and how they match well with the shirts. There are other styles here that have a built in swim diaper. All are UPF 50.
Carter’s Tankini Swimsuit: Even though I don’t have a little girl, I still love to look at what I like if I did have one. I love this tankini by Carter’s. We have a Carter’s boys swim set and its great. If you are looking for something with a little more coverage, this Carter’s sea horse set could be a good option. Both adorable!
Charlie Banana Swim Diaper: These are seriously the cutest things I’ve ever seen! I would get a pair for my son, Camden, but I have a feeling my husband would kill me. Ha!
Tuga Girl's Reusable Swim Diaper: UPF 50 with lots of cute colors and designs.
i play. Solid Brim Sun Protection Hat: I love these hats! They have a tie under the chin and a drawstring on the back that keeps the hat secure. I love the color options and the brim is wide enough that it shades the face, neck and ears, plus its UPF 50+ fabric. They also have reversible options, so you get 2 for the price of 1!
i play. Babywear Sunhat: I would say that these hats are probably better for younger babies as they have a wider brim that goes down the ears and neck for more protection. We have these in multiple colors; the orange is my favorite. They also have the tie under the chin and the drawstring for a perfect fit. The brim in the front still allows for you child to see out. This one is also UPF 50+ fabric.
I play. Baby-boys Classic Flap Sun Protection Hat: These hats have the same perks as the one above, but if you have a boy and want to go with a design instead of a solid color, these are cute options.
Too be honest, it was kind of a task finding an infant/baby shoe, as most that I came across were for toddlers. I’m assuming this is because most little humans don’t really start walking until toddler age. But, I still wanted them for protection.
i play. Unisex-Baby Infant Swim Shoes: These were the only baby water shoes that I found to have a durable bottom sole. All the others were too soft, it didn’t seem as if they would hold up with sand. I love that they are unisex and have six color options. The mesh top makes the shoes breathable and comfy to wear.
Speedo Surfwalker Pro Water Shoe: These shoes only come in toddler sizes, so Camden can’t fit in them yet, but I love the style and color options! They remind me of Nike running shoes that are fun and colorful. They also have a strong sole to them.
Pacific Play Tents Lil Nursery Tent: I bought this one about a month ago. I haven’t used it yet but plan on taking it with me this summer on a beach trip to Cabo. It packs very compact, so easy to travel with. It was the perfect size for Camden. It’s ventilated with a UV protection of 30.
Baby BanZ Sun Protective Beach Tent: This one looked like a great option if you have more than one child and need extra space.
Another great find during my search was the Snuggy Baby wet bag. Great way to keep the wet items separate in your beach bag.
What are you must haves for the beach and pool? Any floats you recommend?
